I love working with plants, but especially eating food that I myself have grown and picked fresh. I suppose the security of having my food growing close by, the nutritional benefit of fresh food, and of course the amazing flavor, are all reasons I like growing food. Yes, there are massive environmental and ecological benefits. Yes, it is much more immune to the increasing cost of food from peak oil. Yes, it is probably the best way to eliminate starvation and poverty. Yes, it is a great way to save money, and if done properly save us time working at a job we don't really like. But ultimately, we all long for a deeper connection to nature, and the life and divinity it represents.
I am convinced that this is the future. And it's the only future, if we in fact have one.
I can still remember the first time my mom explained to me how plants work. How odd I thought. Put this in the ground? And it becomes food?
I went on to garden at school in 5th and 6th grade. At first, I thought it was the worst thing ever. I pictured it as so old fashioned. And who wants to eat vegetables anyway? Well, it turned out to be kind of fun. And with the raw food revolution, garden gourmet is becoming commonplace with a few simple kitchen appliances and a few good cookbooks.
I'm all about making this planet a paradise. The seed is sprouting.
